They are the priests, scribes, and scholars of Rokugan, responsible for communicating with the kami, guiding the spiritual development of the Empire, and supporting their clans. Most shugenja are pacifists, although views vary from family to family and individual to individual on where to draw the line. In particular, there is frequently some grey area around the killing of beings from the Shadowlands.
Magic[edit | edit source]
Shugenja are capable of casting elemental spells by offering prayers to the kami. Most families specialize in one or two of the elemental rings, but the Isawa Family is known for its mastery of all of them.
History[edit | edit source]
The Isawa Family claims that they are progenitors of magic within Rokugan, and several of the shugenja families (such as the Asahina family and the Yogo family) in the Empire can trace their origins to the Phoenix Clan. On the other hand, there are examples of foreign magic practiced by the Iuchi family of the Unicorn Clan that clearly do not come from the Isawa, and the Kitsu family of the Lion Clan derive their power from their spirit ancestry.
